Q: I'm a 44" chest. What size should I go for xxxl or xxl?

I'm 44 too and xxl fits perfectly even with a thick jumper underneath. Go for xxl. One size up will be too large.

Q: Am a 40inch chest would a large be ok for me

Well I'm a 38 to 40 chest and I bought the medium and it fits a treat, unless you prefer a loose fit then get the large you could then get a thick jumper underneath, but this jacket is very warm with the removable liner in place, I've only worn a long sleeve lumberjack type shirt under and I was very warm indeed. Very nice jacket whatever you decide.🤔🙂
